Stephanie Etienne, PMHNP-BC
I am a board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who treats the whole person with practical, collaborative care. My background spans community mental health, Veterans Affairs, primary care, inpatient medicine, and private practice, which means I understand both the science of treatment and the real-world barriers that can get in the way of healing. I use medication thoughtfully when warranted, and I always pair it with skills, coaching, and simple, steady steps you can sustain.
I chose psychiatry because I saw how much it helps when care is a partnership. During my nursing training, a psychiatry rotation clicked for me right away. I loved listening closely, understanding patterns, and seeing how compassionate, clear plans could restore stability and a sense of normalcy. Later, a formative year at the VA taught me to be kinder and more attuned to men’s mental health needs. Many men carry trauma silently due to shame or expectations to “be strong.” I meet those stories with respect, privacy, and concrete help.
My Story
My path also shapes how I practice. I was born in Haiti and moved to the United States at 12 without speaking English. I’m a woman of color, an immigrant, and a single mom. I know what it means to start over, ask for help, and keep going when life feels loud. I was diagnosed with ADHD, which sharpened my empathy for focus, organization, and structure. With patients, I emphasize small wins and routines that build momentum. We breathe first. We simplify. We do the next right thing.
I don’t believe in quick fixes if a root cause can be addressed. We look at sleep, stress, nutrition, movement, labs, and triggers. We set realistic goals and use mindfulness to stay present with what you can control today. When medication makes sense, I avoid polypharmacy and choose options that support aliveness rather than numbness. When non-medication support can help, I suggest tools like therapy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, gentle exercise, and practical checklists.
My patients often say they feel seen, heard, and guided. I am direct and validating. I will ask the questions others may have missed, and I will also help you translate insight into action. If you want to return to school, we might look at options together. If you are working toward stability for your family, we will build routines that fit your life. Slow and steady matters. Progress is progress.
Outside the office, I recharge with quiet moments on the couch, travel, and nature. I love mountains, trees, and any place that feels peaceful and green. Friends tease me for always being cold and for happily choosing sleep over too many excursions on vacation. I am a loyal Olivia Pope fan for her grit and grace. I don’t love cooking or driving, and I will walk or take public transportation whenever possible. Acupuncture and hydrotherapy are my favorite ways to reset.
If you are ready to be an active participant in your care, I will meet you with honesty, consistency, and a plan. We will ground first, then grow.
I believe healing happens when you face discomfort with honesty, give yourself grace, and stay consistent. Growth takes time, but peace always follows.
